Director's word

Dear naive art enthusiasts and naive art artists,

It's with great pleasure that I recently accepted the position of director of the Musée international d'art naïf de Magog (MIANM), an institution that was founded a little over 10 years ago by artist Yvon. M. Daigle. As a career museum worker with a B. A. in Art History, I served years ago as director of the Musée des beaux-arts of Sherbrooke, a fine arts museum where I had the opportunity, for the first time, to manage a naïve art collection. It was during that period that I developed my interest in the particular form of artistic expression that is naïve art. This interest led me years later to join the Board of the MIANM and, as I have explained above, to decide weeks ago to take on a more active role in its future development.

In my new position, I will of course strive to ensure that the importance of our museum's role in the promotion of naïve art grows and that our view of this art form as one that needs to be studied seriously as a source of fundamental information on creative processes is shared. Our institution's focus in this context will not only be placed on showcasing naïve artists, but also and maybe more importantly on providing means to the public to appreciate naïve art and to learn to discover its many facets and the knowledge they hide. This is our challenge and the adventure that awaits us promises to be an exciting one.

To take on this challenge, we will count on the collaboration of many people, including artists of course, but also museum members, volunteers, collectors, sponsors and, not to be forgotten, the City of Magog. Many such contributors are already hard at work, which explains our museum's growth over the last few years. Thanks to such efforts and many others, you are part of a growing number of people showing interest in our institution and we greatly appreciate it. Be assured that we hold your interests at heart and that we will take them into account as we move forward.

With this, I would close by saying that I look forward to meeting you, either in our exhibition spaces or on the Web and the related Facebook page.

Best regards!

Michel Forest
