Born in La Coruña, Galicia (Spain) in 1931, Xose Teixeiro was known for being a celebrated psychiatrist and a distinguished humanist. Both a musician and later a painter, he demonstrated great creativity throughout his life, often putting it to good use in his medical practice. He died in Quebec in 2006. As a painter, he cherished the naïve style throughout his career for the freedom of expression it brought him in his evocations of peasant life in the villages of his home region.
The permanente exhibition allows the museum to showcase different facets of naïve art through the jewels of its collection. Generally renewed every two years or less, it includes around thirty works, most often grouped by geographical origin or naive criteria. An important place is given to Quebec artists, among other works from the Americas, Europe or Asia, as well as to recent acquisitions.
